REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Health & Human Services, or a related field
  2. Master’s Degree preferred
  3. Minimum of three (3) years school nursing experience
  4. Must have demonstrated strong leadership and communication skills
  5. Valid nursing license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Board of Nursing
  6. Valid School Nurse Certification and Supervisory Certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education preferred
  7. Certified CPR Instructor, or willing to gain certification within six (6) months of hire date
  8. Ability to travel frequently between buildings
  9. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common professional and technical journals, governmental regulations and legal documents.
  10. Ability to respond to common inquiries from staff and regulatory agencies.
  11. Ability to write reports, correspondence and procedure manual.
  12. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administration, students and parents.
  13. Ability to work mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  14. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  15. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. 

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services

 

SUPERVISES: All Professional and Support Staff as assigned.

 

JOB GOAL: Supervises the professional nursing staff and dental hygienists of the District, as directed.  Promotes a state of holistic well-being for staff, students, and members of the community so that they may be able to experience success in the educational system.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Assists in the implementation of the Districts school health and dental program.
  2. Reviews and supervise the District dental health program.
  3. Coordinates the District Wellness Council, supervising and reviewing programs and initiatives of the Wellness Council.
  4. Coordinates the Crisis Management Flight Team and participates in crisis events as part of the Intermediate Unit Response Team.
  5. Coordinates the Concussion Management Teams at all building levels.
  6. Reviews and updates School Board Policies as related to student and staff health and wellness.
  7. Collaborates with Special Education and Alternative Education administrators regarding student health and psychosocial needs and mandated and non-mandates nursing services for these student populations.
  8. Acts as liaison between the District certified school nurses and the District School Physician Consultant, Pennsylvania Department of Health and Education and Board of Nursing regarding specific findings, problems, reports, procedures, etc.
  9. Maintains continuous review and revision of the District First Aid and Medication Procedure Manuals.
  10. Develops, maintains, reviews and updates manuals and procedures related to current trends and policies regarding student physical and mental health (e.g. Suicide Intervention and Prevention Manual).
  11. Annual review and updates standing medication orders with the School Physician Consultant.
  12. Oversees responsibility for Vaccines for Children Program.
  13. Maintains and reports on AED program.
  14. Acts as liaison between the school health services staff and various school district consultants, district personnel and community members.
  15. Assists in gathering budget information and planning the budget.
  16. Reviews bids on various supplies.
  17. Coordinates annual inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
  18. Assists in ordering, receiving and distributing supplies.
  19. Maintains continuous review of all District forms pertaining to school health services.
  20. Controls the distribution of and use of all District school health services forms.
  21. Reviews individual certified school nurses’ reports.
  22. Reviews various reports received from private and community health care providers.
  23. Reviews information for medical and non-medical 504 plans, attends meetings and signs plans as central administrator.
  24. Prepares monthly, annual and other reports as required.
  25. Reviews all accident reports.
  26. Reviews child abuse reports as needed.
  27. Provides Act 126 (Child Abuse) training as certified trainer.
  28. Coordinates and assists in functions of all District clinics.
  29. Coordinates administration of working paper physicals.
  30. Coordinates administration of sports physicals with the Athletic Director, Athletic Trainer and Sports Medicine Physician Consultant.
  31. Reviews and maintains all sports physical forms and the list of medically cleared student athletes.
  32. Coordinates audiometer calibration program.
  33. Coordinates nebulizer equipment cleaning and maintenance between each academic year.
  34. Participates in the interviewing and makes recommendations in the hiring of school health services staff.
  35. Prepares and distributes certified school nurse schedules based on state mandated nurse-student ratios and building activity.
  36. Maintains contact with human resources personnel and prepares contingency staffing plans to ensure daily coverage.
  37. Supervises, observes and evaluates the performance of the certified school nurses and dental hygienists in the performance of their duties.
  38. Identifies, coordinates and evaluates all in-service and professional improvement programs for the certified school nurses and dental hygienists.
  39. Maintains responsibility for the professional development of certified school nurses and dental hygienists, as well as other services staff, as requested.
  40. Documents and recommends disciplinary action up to and including termination of nursing staff members.
  41. Coordinates the various student nurse training cooperative agreements for the District.
  42. Provides and/or supervises nursing coverage for students with chronic health care needs during summer and extended school year programs. These duties will include medication administration, urgent first aid response and health record review.
  43. Performs other duties as assigned for the Director of Student Service and/or Superintendent of the District.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Full year.  Salary to be established by the Board.

                                         

EVALUATION: Performance is evaluated in accordance with the Compensation and Performance Evaluation Plan for School and District Leaders.
